Restoring a tooth to it’s natural functionality, strength, and comfort is an important part of dental care, and when your damaged teeth are repaired you can feel confident when chewing, speaking, and even smiling.
In order to restore your teeth to their original function and comfort, Rivas Dental Care of Miami follows one of two courses of action: direct, and indirect restoration.
Direct Tooth Restoration – This treatment can be completed in a standard office visit. The tooth is prepared, by use of tools to remove the decay before being filled. Rivas uses a variety of filling materials. For strength on the chewing surface of the teeth our dentists will use silver amalgam fillings. For surfaces that are visible, we can use a composite filling, a mixture of plastic and glass, that matches the natural tooth.
Indirect Tooth Restoration – When a tooth cannot be restored to full function with a filling, Dr. Rivas will turn to other options that offer the same result. These treatments require more office time, and are more expensive. A crown may be placed over the entire tooth to protect it, or a bridge can be placed over a section of teeth. This allows you to chew as well as covers unsightly decay or missing teeth. If a crown is not possible Dr. Rivas can replace the tooth with a permanent dental implant. Implants are beneficial because they are permanent, they restore the smile, and they protect the other teeth from unnecessary shifting. If implants are not an option because the jawbone is unsuitable, or because of multiple extractions, dentures are a great option. Dentures restore the mouth to full function and, depending on the course of treatment, you can be fitted with your dentures as soon as the teeth are extracted. After you become used to dentures, they are very comfortable as well.
There are many ways in which your dentist can restore your smile to it’s former brilliance. The sooner you seek dental care, the easier and cheaper your restoration will be. Preventative care is always important (brushing, flossing, cleanings, regular oral exams). Neglecting your smile is only the beginning of a lifetime of dental care and repairs that can be avoided.
